Match Report - Chepstow RFC u9 v Cwmbran RFC u9

Match Report:           07 Feb 2019 – Chepstow v Cwmbran (Home)

And so it was Cwmbran round two.  Another cold winters day but parents were dry, spirits were high.  Chepstow warmed up with some set piece drills, spreading the ball wide and working on their handling skills.  Cwmbran were doing similar at the other end of the pitch and showed some good pace and momentum.  This will be a close game.

Both Chepstow and Cwmbran were black and whites, so once shirts were reversed Cwmbran got us started.  It didn’t take long for them to break Chepstow’s defensive line and score the first try of the match in under a minute.  We’ve had better starts.

At the restart the ball went wide, Flynn broke the Cwmbran defensive line with a turn of pace but to no avail as some unforced errors at the breakdown resulted in a turn-over.  Cwmbran retaliated with a strong run which proceeded to touch and another turn-over.  Seconds later Chepstow did the same thing, opting to go back into the Cwmbran defence and being tackled into touch.  The early part of the first half was scrappy and tense.  Ref Ben had to engage both teams in an attempt to improve discipline, but the hand offs from Cwmbran and high tackles from Chepstow were to become a theme of the game.

Once re-briefed, Chepstow got us restarted and struck back with a driving run from Flynn through the Cwmbran defence. 1:1. At the restart Cwmbran set off quick and looked sharp, but Chepstow had a steadfast defence with quality tackles going in from Amelie, Jonty and Otis.  Defensive pressure from Chepstow forced errors In the opposition and Otis capitalised with a powerful solo run to score.  Great lateral movement showcasing his pace and making it 2:1 Chepstow.  The clock wound down to finish the first half without incident, but the tension between the teams was building for sure.

Chepstow got us going in the second half and did some solid attack work to get within striking distance of the Cwmbran try line.  This time it was Tomos Barker who ran the try in with a tidy run down the touch line the bag the third try for Chepstow.  Good work Tomos, that’s 3:1. The rest of the second half was physical, with both teams exchanging hard tackles and feeling the tempo of a tough game.  Jonty and Zack stood out as the tackle machines this half, but everyone dug deep and committed to the physical game.  Well done U9s.  3:1 Chepstow at the end of the match.

Cwmbran started the third half and put pressure on Chepstow’s defence.  Their first try came through a lateral run across the pitch, and some laboured missed tackles from the Chepstow defence.  3:2 Chepstow.  At the restart, Chepstow looked sloppy again, seemingly losing some concentration as a knock on and resultant Cwmbran scrum led to their third try to make the game even at 3:3.

And so this highly competitive game would end 3 trys all.  The game was a window into the future of rough and tumble rugby with sides that push the rules of the game.  A good game that would have been great given some discipline on the pitch, and less commentary at the side lines.
