Match Report – Caerleon RFC U9 v Chepstow RFC U9

Team – Will A ©, Tomas, Otis, Osian, Owen, Flynn, Travis, Zach, Harry, James, Tomos

11 brave druids from Chepstow descended onto the heavily defended Roman town of Caerleon to face 19 centurions determined to maintain their winning ways against the local druids. A gladiatorial battle that would not have been misplaced in the grand colosseum of Rome was set to shake the ground of this furthest reach of the Roman Empire… “Let the Games Commence”

The game started in a tense manner with both teams struggling to find the way through. A double knock on led to 2 early scrums, which the Chepstow players were unsure of, having not played a game with scrums for several weeks. A good scrum by Chepstow and pass off the base by Flynn to Otis on a power run led to a free-kick after a high tackle. Looking for space Chepstow scored the first try of the game with Flynn going over the whitewash. Caerleon hit back through their strike runners with their first try. Caerleon came at Chepstow looking for a quick second try but a fantastic tackle by Owen slowed their momentum allowing Chepstow the chance to get a six-tackle turnover. Tomas went on a strong run to put Chepstow up the field, with a great offload to Otis, Tomas quickly got back into position to take an offload from Otis to continue the attack. Caerleon got the ball back to score their second try. Caerleon finished the first half with another try to lead the game 3 – 1.

With a strong squad Caerleon made a raft of changes to their team at the start of the second half and their fresh legs led to Caerleon’s fourth try to lead by 3 tries. Chepstow were able to strike back with a second try for the team and for Flynn. Some great pressure by Chepstow created a brilliant turnover. Otis then took the ‘Roman Road’ through the defence creating space for the remainder of the team to get onto the front foot, James’ pass out to Will who went on a weaving run through the defence to score a well deserved try, the captain leading by example and getting Chepstow to within one score. As the momentum of the game had switched to Chepstow, Caerleon switched on some of their stronger players who had excelled in the first half. Flynn was unfortunate not to get a hat-trick when tackled close to the line, which was the sixth tackle and the ball turned over to Caerleon. Otis put in a strong tackle on the Caerleon strike runner and then went on a strong run through the middle to score a try and put the scores level. A tight finish to the game was set and it looked as though Osian would seal the deal for Chepstow with a great run down the wing only to be tackled into touch. Caerleon had the turnover and were informed this was the last play of the game, a fumble by Caerleon in their own-half allowed Otis to pounce on the ball and some quick hands to Osian gave him the glory of scoring the winning try. Second half score 1 – 4

Chepstow left everything on the field of play and can be proud of the way they managed to keep their heads after going down by 3 tries to come back in the second half to win the game.

Final Score – Caerleon 20 v 25 Chepstow

Player of the Match – Will Adshead for some great runs and a well worked try and for getting stuck in throughout.

Tries – Flynn (2), Will, Otis, Osian

Note:

Being offered an extra 10mins of play the jaded druids of Chepstow agreed to the extra playtime, but against the reinforcements from the first half the Centurions of Rome were in a position of strength and won this part of the game 6 tries to 1. This section of play was a great training period to identify areas of strength and areas of improvement for the coaching team to work on in training.
