Chepstow RFC u8 v Abergavenny RFC u8 Match Report

Chepstow welcomed Abergavenny in what is always a keenly contested game. A tough abrasive game once more caused many challenges for a Chepstow side missing its 2 gymnasts (Henry & Amelie) who were performing in their Christmas show….

Team – Owen (Capt.), Otis, Zach, Will A, Flynn, Tomos, Tomas, Will D

Chepstow won the toss and got off to an encouraging start with a powerful run up the middle only to lose the ball in a turnover to Abergavenny. Abergavenny took the ball quickly and moved up field for the first try of the game. Chepstow once again pushed forward following the restart but were penalised for stepping into touch, Abergavenny then moved forward at pace with some great offloads to score their second of the match. Chepstow were not to be dismayed at going two scores down with some decisive running leading to their first try of the game by Will A. Abergavenny then hit back with 2 tries with some strong tagging on Chepstow’s attacks. Will D pulled a try back for Chepstow to leave the 1st half at 2 – 4.

The second half started with several strong tags by Chepstow, Zach standing out as a tag machine. Abergavenny however with some powerful abrasive running scored the first try of the second half. The match then entered a period of several 6 tag turnovers by both sides, Abergavenny however broke the cycle with their second try of the period. Chepstow heads started to drop at this point as they couldn’t breach the Abergavenny defence due to not running forward. The physical style of the opposition’s attack also caused Chepstow to take a step back.  This lead to an Abergavenny turnover and a subsequent try. Frustration grew on the home team’s bench with the coach getting overly passionate, only for the ref to remind the coach about the spirit of the game. Abergavenny pushed on and added another try before the referee called time on the second period of play. Chepstow 0 – 4 Abergavenny.

A serious talking to the players by coaches during the break saw a rejuvenated Chepstow come out for the third and final period of play. A strong run through the midfield by Otis led to a try by Tomas. Abergavenny continued with their strong abrasive style scoring 2 quick tries in reply. Chepstow kept their heads and pushed forward to score through Otis to level the scores in this period. Abergavenny got back onto the score sheet followed by an Otis try after a great run through the middle of the Abergavenny team by Tomos. Chepstow by this point had learnt to deal with Abergavenny and managed another 6 tag turnover which led Owen to score a long looping try. Abergavenny scored 2 successive tries to get the upper hand in this period, with 30 seconds left on the clock Otis scored his third try of the game to give Chepstow a well deserved 5 – 5 draw in the 3rd period.

Abergavenny deserving winners 13 tries to 7.

Man of the Match - Flynn

Tries – Otis (3), Tomas (1), Owen (1), Will A (1), Will D (1)

A disappointing match for Chepstow caused by a number of areas that need to be worked on in the coming weeks:

  • Stop bunching around the player with the ball (not providing space for us to run forward)

  • Run forward and don’t be afraid to get tagged…

  • Quick simple pass to supporting players while opposition team are still offside

  • Maintain a defensive line and push up as a team

  • Coach needs to maintain his composure…
