Cwmbran RFC u8 v Chepstow RFC u8 Match Report

Fresh from last week’s local derby victory at home Chepstow under 8’s were on the road early this Sunday to take on Cwmbran.

Team – Tomas (Capt.), Kameli, Otis, Henry, Owen, Amelie, Zach, Will, Flynn, Tomos

Chepstow got the match underway and steadily progressed toward the try line against an energetic Cwmbran side keen to avenge a heavy defeat earlier in the season. With five tags taken Cwmbran sensed an early opportunity to take possession however a looping run around the back saw Flynn touch down in the corner. Cwmbran struck back relatively quickly and although the tag was taken on the line the home side had the try awarded. A driving run by Otis from the restart was halted with Cwmbran defending well however his quick pass to Henry kept the play alive. Henry moved it quickly on to Flynn who claimed his second of the game to put the away side ahead. Cwmbran were clearly frustrated and responded with some superb tagging to take a six tag turnover. Having lost the ball for no reward Chepstow did what they have continued to do all season and worked hard as a team to reclaim possession with a six tag turnover of their own, great work! With the ball back in Chepstow hands it was that young man Flynn again with a darting run to complete a first half hat-trick and send Chepstow in 3-1 up at the break.

Cwmbran were out of the blocks quickly after the restart, two quick tries drawing the match level despite some great tagging from Chepstow. With the ball in hand and some neat teamwork moving the ball quickly it was Owen’s turn to go on a mazy run to get his name on the scoresheet. Cwmbran struck back but Flynn was once again on hand to put Chepstow back in front straight from the restart. With the home side running in to touch Chepstow got the ball back but lost possession following a six tag turnover. As was the case in the first half Chepstow showed real character to regain the ball with a six tag turnover of their own and the home side were becoming increasingly frustrated. Flynn ran in his fifth of the day but Cwmbran soon struck back. Zach went over for his second in as many weeks and despite Cwmbran going over at the whistle they couldn’t prevent a 7-5 defeat.

With both sides still seemingly having plenty of energy the coaches agreed on an extra period of play. Cwmbran were clearly keen to make the extra time count and scored two quick tries before Kameli went on a great run eventually touching down after bringing his team mates in to play. Two more Cwmbran tries followed with Chepstow finding it hard to grab the tags through ball. Kameli did manage to add another and Otis rounded of the day with his first of the day which meant with all scores totted up, a 10-9 victory in Chepstow’s favour.

Some great teamwork and discipline today, the team working hard as a unit and getting stuck in which unsettled the opposition. The narrow pitch was a test for the team but gaps were found and when the ball was moved quickly Chepstow were potent in attack.

Man of the Match - Tomos

Tries – Flynn (5), Kameli (2), Owen (1), Zach (1), Otis (1)
