Team – Otis ©, Flynn, Tomas, Tomos, Zach, Xander, Kameli, Owen, Jonty, Will

It was derby day for the team as they travelled to local neighbours a few miles down the River Severn. A sunny blustery day welcomed Chepstow’s young players at the Longfellow Rd ground.

The game started as a 9 a-side afair with a number of turnovers by both teams which was broken by a good break by Caldicot only for Jonty to halt the advance with a good cover tackle. Xander tackled a Caldicot player who dropped the ball which he swiftly picked up running from the half way line for the first try of the game (0-1), Chepstow were putting in a great defensive display and forced a six tackle turnover. Chepstow were back in possession and Xander went on a strong run offloading to Tomas ball, the ball found its way to Otis who was tackled close to the line and the ball went through the hands to the wing for Flynn to score (0-2).

Caldicot were struggling with the pressure inflicted by the Chepstow defence and knocked on, some great passing through the phases put Jonty onto the scoreboard (0-3) This finished the first 10 minutes of the game.

The second half started with a bit of back and for, it was eventually settled down by Caldicot who managed to avoid the six tackle turnover to score their first try (1-3), Chepstow swiftly took control of the game again with a try for Flynn (1-4). The pressure by Chepstow’s defence forced another turnover and Flynn followed up to grab his hat-trick. (1-5)

Otis managed to join the try fest following a bursting run by Tomas who provided a great offload to Otis to score (1-6), the next phase of play provided an element of déjà vu as Tomas smashed through the middle and then offloaded to Otis who was close to the line but just couldn’t make the final few metres but a good pass out to Jonty led to another Chepstow try (1-7). Chepstow scored again as Xander used his pace to get around the Caldicot defence (1-8).

Chepstow were now running through the phases well by working fast off the line constantly putting Caldicot under pressure forcing multiple turnovers. Kameli was now on the pitch following a quick trip home by Dad for his gum-shield, a lovely run provided the space and a simple pass to Owen who scored his first try (1-9). In the next phase of play Xander ran striaght following another Caldicot knock on passing to Flynn who offloaded to Zach who weaved through the middle of the defence to add to the try scorers (1-10)

With Kameli now available and Chepstow having 11 players, Xander joined the Caldicot ranks to make the teams up to 10 a-side and made an immediate impact scoring for Caldicot (2-10). Chepstow kicked off in the restart with good passing by the team finished off with an Owen try (2-11). With Xander providing some backbone in the Caldicot defence they had some focus and a lovely run gave Caldicot another try, Chepstow losing a bit of composure… (3-11). The final play of the game saw a barnstorming run by Tomas who offloaded to Otis, following a little juggling of the ball just in front of the line he managed to ground the ball to finish the game. 3 tries for Caldicot and 12 tries for Chepstow.

A great all-round game by Chepstow with all players playing well, Jonty deserved the player of the match award for consistently tackling the Caldicot players and not giving them any room. Other notable mentions for Tomos who got stuck into the game with some great technical tackles and Will who was offloading the ball like Sonny Bill Williams all game.

Tries – Flynn (3), Xander (2), Jonty (2), Owen (2), Otis (2), Zach (1) ……..not forgetting Xander’s 1 for Caldicot!!!!
