Match Report u15s vs Blackwood RFC

Another step up in class for the U15s against a good Blackwood side. Brent Harkins deputised as referee and got us underway. Chepstow were quickly on the front foot playing excellent, flowing rugby through all forwards and backs. The front five of Jayden, Angus, Dan, Jake and Fred were doing the heavy lifting at the breakdown and set pieces, allowing the back row of Rhys, Harry and Will to wreak havoc around the pitch, tackoing, jackaling and providing great continuity to release the backline.

Chepstow were soon on the scoreboard with tries from Will and Harry but Blackwood weren’t going to lie down too easily and they hit back with 2 of their own tries with some very strong running down the slope. Chepstow weren’t rattled however and got back on the front foot. The backline was working really well. Edwin releasing the backline with Thomas bring Callum and Joe into the game to make good ground and Harry Glynn and Tom Wacey offering great support everytime we broke the gainline. Ieuan, at fullback, was also very solid and gathered everything sent his way. Spencer, James & Keegan came on as substitutes and each made a significsnt impact, Keegan free running as ever likewise James and Spencer relishing the physical battle around the fringes.

Soon Chepstow were back infront with tries from Harry Taylor, Tom Wacey scored a cracker and Ieuan with Blackwood nicking one just before the whistle to go into the break Chepstow  40 – 19 Blackwood. The boys knew they had played well but they also knew they’d been in a real battle against a physical side, so when I confirmed the scoreline they couldn’t believe it.

The second half down the hill was expected to be more straightforward. However, Blackwood showed what a very good side they were by retaining the ball and defending bravely. The game was in deadlock, lots of good skill, quick multi-phase ball but no score until 5 minutes to go Joe Beard got a metre of space and hit the gap, stepping two players to score under the posts.

Another game where Chepstow U15s showed their grit but also their talent for using the ball and creating space. Final score 47-19.
