Chepstow RFC U9 v Caldicot RFC U9 – Match Report

Match Report – Chepstow RFC U9 v Caldicot RFC U9

Team – Osian ©, Macie, Tomas, Amelie, Otis, Will A, Owen, Will D, Flynn, Travis, Kameli, Zach, Harry, Xander

Following on from the excitement of the professional game’s derby at Rodney Parade between Dragons and Blues where some of the home players were performing guard of honour duties it was time for an older, deep rooted derby between neighbouring towns Chepstow and Caldicot.

Following a good start to the season Chepstow were expecting a tougher test from local rivals who always bring a strong structured approach to their game and it was Caldicot who hit first. Some powerful running by Caldicot caused previously unseen defensive weakness from Chepstow who to date have not been bounced off in the tackle. Otis struck back quickly to keep the score in check, but some great offloading in the tackle by Caldicot got them back in front. Flynn put in a string of determined tackles to halt the Caldicot attack and the first turnover of the game which then led to Tomas scoring a try in the corner. Caldicot were keen to put themselves back in front all for a try saving tackle from Zach. A storming run through the Caldicot defence opened the field for Flynn to get onto the scoresheet and Chepstow to fleetingly take the lead. A calamitous defensive sandwich by Owen and Zach where they both missed the attacking player ending up tackling each other saw Caldicot score the last try of the half and a shared score line of 3 tries all in the first period of play.

Otis took the ball forward in the second half and offloaded the ball to Will who powered forward to pass the ball to Zach to score the first try of the half. Otis then managed to get his second try of the game putting Chepstow two tries up. Amelie came onto the field and got stuck in with a crunching tackle having watched the team struggle a little in the first half. Caldicot grabbed a quick pick-up and went over to score. The game was finely balanced for a piece of Shane Williams trickery by Otis, taking the ball from Zach he managed to weave a line through the defence that no one else saw to score his third try. Chepstow then secured a further turnover and Xander smashed his way through the defence with some great direct running. Now with a three try advantage, Amelie was not going to let Caldicot back into the game with a try saving tackle on the five-yard line to end the period of play, with a level of determination which would have been nice to see from the Dragons yesterday!

With strength in depth both sets of coaches agreed to give all players plenty of game-time, so a third period of play was enjoyed. Following a few changes to the home team Caldicot struck first and it was clear Chepstow were missing a few key players. Xander however took the mantle and got this second try of the game. Caldicot determined to make a game of it struck back with continued offloads and direct running. The first scrum of the day was awarded to Caldicot as Chepstow seemed to tire with some loose ball play. Nothing really happened from the scrum and Caldicot knocked on giving Chepstow a scrum. The scrum half popped the ball to Owen who made a great run forward passing to Osian out of the tackle who then set-up Amelie for a deserved try for her defensive efforts. Chepstow then took control of the game finishing off with tries from Owen, which was well deserved for his effort throughout the game and finally a third try by Xander.

A great team performance by Chepstow and it was great to see half of the team scoring tries in todays win against our local foes. Caldicot were a pleasure to host and showed no end of rugby spirit in the way they approached the game and the behaviour of their players, coaches and supporters.

Final Score – Chepstow 55 v 30 Caldicot
