Team – Amelie (Capt.), Flynn, Tomos, Henry, Owen, Tomas, Will, Otis
Match 1 - Abergavenny RFC Under 8’s Vs. Chepstow RFC under 8’s
Abergavenny got proceedings underway with try straight from the off and against a side they have found it tough against in the past, Chepstow had a look of “here we go again”. From the restart Otis went on a mazy run and with space opening up in front of him he went over to put Chepstow back on level terms. Having shown his team mates the opposition were not invincible Chepstow got in to their stride and some great tagging from Amelie and Tomas kept the opposition on their toes. A passage of play followed that saw Abergavenny go over twice for a 3-1 lead however Chepstow were growing in confidence. From the restart Tomos went on a driving run and a quick pass sent Henry over the line to pull one back. Chepstow then regained possession from an Abergavenny error and Tomos once again fed Henry who pulled the scores level at 3-3. Having been pegged back Abergavenny then pushed forward to retake the lead. At the restart Amelie went on a driving run, passed to Tomas and another quick pass on the line for Owen to touch down. Abergavenny surged forward once more but great tagging by Tomas and his team mates drew the first 6 tag turnover for Chepstow and they made it count with Amelie’s run and pass to Otis to put Chepstow ahead for the first time in the match. Clearly not used to being behind, Abergavenny struck back but with the wind in their sails Chepstow once again took the lead through Flynn’s run down the line and touch down in the corner. With the clock ticking Abergavenny managed to draw level at the final whistle however this was the closest the sides have ever been and credit to Chepstow for a great team performance.
Match 2 - Abergavenny RFC Under 8’s Vs. Chepstow RFC under 8’s
With a squad of 14 players Abergavenny were keen for another opportunity to turn the previous draw in to a victory. Despite the fresh legs it was Chepstow who went in front from kick off with Otis touching down once more. Abergavenny pulled one back almost straight way however Chepstow managed to turn the ball over at the restart. Flynn surged for the corner putting Owen in for the try….or so he thought. A mystery earlier infringement saw play pulled back but not to be deterred, Flynn eventually got it over the line for a 2-1 Chepstow lead. Again Abergavenny struck back but again Chepstow combined well through Will, Tomas and Amelie with Henry sealing the move to put Chepstow in front again. Chepstow again pushed down the wing and scored what the crowd thought was a solid try by Otis only for the ref to penalise him for diving over the line (which is not permitted in Tag Rugby) With cold hands and tired legs Abergavenny grabbed two quick tries to take the lead back but a wonderful solo effort from Amelie drew the scores level. With the clock ticking there was time for one more phase of play and the home side eventually got it over, some of the away supporters claiming via a dive over the line, for the win despite some resolute tagging from Chepstow.
A great game played by Chepstow who deserved to have at least drawn against a strong Abergavenny side considering the way they performed as a team throughout the match and also following last week’s performance against Caerleon.
Final Score Abergavenny 55 v 50 Chepstow
Tries – Otis (3), Henry (3), Flynn (3), Owen (1), Tomas (1), Amelie (1)
Man of the Match - Henry
