Match Report u15s v Monmouth

Decent performance against a very committed, well drilled Monmouth team.

Everyone was there bright and early which was good news and without our team Captain, the coaches had a discussion about building more leaders from within the team, this was of course after Lloyd had demonstrated his stunt skills in the changing room (enough said). Taylor was assigned captain for the game. The coaches warmed up the team and attempted to work on some key aspects, however I must say this was one of the poorest warm ups I have seen in terms of player commitment and concentration levels. This attitude then unfortunately spilt on to the pitch for the first 15 minutes. After a few huge hits from Monmouth and a stern talking from the coaches, the boys started to get into their stride, with several players still missing this gave great opportunities to other players, with Luke carrying on where he had left off before unfortunately landing awkwardly on his shoulder and Lewis showing significant improvement, benefiting from his time with the under 16’s. The forwards started to get on top, Will, Jayden, Joe and Taylor carrying really well, attempting to suck in the defence and Travis organising from scrum half we made some excellent gains. The forwards continued to carry through Morgan and Lloyd which created space for Travis to force his way over for the first try, with the conversion being missed. (5-0)

Putting ourselves under pressure through our inability to catch kick offs is becoming a common theme and only some excellent covering tackling from Morgan Voaden preventing Monmouth from hitting straight back. The forwards were starting to get a foothold in the game, resulting in plenty of possession for our backs, however through a combination of poor decision making and lying too flat we either dropped the ball or hit a brick wall in defence.

When the backs finally gave themselves some depth to run onto the ball, the exceptional Steven Volau broke through several tackles and showed a great turn of pace to score the second try under the posts, which Will Morgan converted (12-0)

Half Time 12 - 0.

Only one change at half time with Joe Clough making way for Macsyn. Bobby had already been replaced by Owain. Chepstow caught the kick off through Lloyd and the forwards continued to carry hard around the fringes attempting to suck in the defence before releasing the backs, Ieuan, Owen and Owain showing so strong running and Will Morgan hitting the line from deep. With pick and go working very well, we made excellent territorial progress, but unfortunately some poor handling resulted in a scrum. From the resulting scrum we pushed them off the ball and Will Supple picked up and burst from the base, he threw a world class dummy and showed excellent pace to score the 3rd try of the game from 40 yards. Unfortunately the kick was missed. (17-0).

The game was turning into a fierce contest, with Jayden taking a big blow and being replaced by Lewis who had recovered from his knock. Sam and Lloyd led the defensive line with some considerable hits going in and some excellent line speed, turning the ball over time and time again, Macsyn also got heavily involved with some excellent tackles on their big ball carrying 8. The most pleasing thing is how our strength in depth is developing and how players are getting used to having to play more than one position. With Monmouth still not taking a backward step the huge hits continued to go in. Ben started to counteract the rush defence with little dinks over the defence turning them and trusting our defensive line to put them under pressure. This resulted in much better field position and with our scrum going very well we were able to turn the ball over and go on the attack. Steven carried exceptionally well again and some excellent hands, Owen was put into space to score the 4th and final try of the game. Will missed the kick (22-0)

Good Win in the end.
