With the roar of two wheeled machines crossing the Severn providing the soundtrack, Chepstow RFC under 8’s took on Cinderford RFC under 8’s in glorious sunshine on home turf this morning. With the away side bringing numbers all eight of the Chepstow squad were given a full run out, this week’s team sheet comprising of Owen (Capt.), Otis, Will D, Tomos, Flynn, Tomas, Will A and James.

Cinderford got the game underway and they swiftly worked the ball to the corner. Despite a caution for using the ball to hand off and protecting the tag they eventually went over to score the first try of the match.  With Chepstow hands finally on the ball some good running by Will D, Flynn and Owen set Tomas on his way to go over and level the scores. A passage of play then ensued whereby both sides took six tags for turnover ball. With the ball eventually back in Chepstow hands Otis went on a galloping run toward the try line only for a wonderful diving tag by a Cinderford player thwarting him a metre out. A quick pass to Flynn who was in support meant the move was not in vain, Chepstow going in at the break 2-1 ahead.

Cinderford took the opportunity to introduce fresh legs but a misplaced pass was swiftly picked up by Flynn who brought Otis in to play. He surged forward and passed to Will D in support and when he was tagged Tomas was on hand to receive the pass and go over again for Chepstow. Cinderford restarted but again a handling error cost them dearly, this time Otis was on hand to scoop the ball up and head straight for the try line. With the wind in their sails Chepstow then set about adding two more tries through Man of the Match Flynn, the first after some good running by Will A and Otis and the second after a six tag turnover with Flynn running almost the full length of the pitch to touch down and seal a 6-1 victory.

Once again, the streetwise opposition proved an early test but Chepstow’s tenacious tagging, speed of thought and support play proved too much for the opposition.
