Match Report U15s vs Glamorgan Wanderers RFC

With no fewer than 37 players available today and despite 2 opposition cancellations on Wednesday, we were able to play 2 separate games in 2 separate locations for the very first time. After the logistical mission of retrieving all of the Alcoron rugby shirts (thank you to those that donated them!), Chepstow U15s arrived at the Glamorgan Wanderers ground in blazing sunshine with hopes very high of a repeat of last season’s victory against the same opposition.

Almost unbelievably, the remnants of the previous evening’s fireworks display lay strewn all over the field which meant our parents had to walk it and pick up all the detritus. The home side were also struggling for a referee which meant Jonathan had to cut short his coffee to get into his kit! Anyway, the whistle went and we were soon underway. From the kick-off Chepstow pressed early on, turning over possession and attacking from the halfway line. Our two debutants Harry Glynn (wing) and Ieuan Rose (outside half) combined to work the right flank with Harry showing a good turn of pace and an eye for a gap being well supported by Ieuan who jinked through the defence to open the scoring with Keegan’s conversion landing near the corner flag ;-)

From the restart Rhys took us straight back on the attack. Close support work from Fred Conridge and Joe Beard ensured good yards were made. Under pressure, the home team conceded a penalty 15 metres out and the ever ready Will Supple took the charge on and broke several tackles to score with Keegan converting. Ieuan took a great catch off the next kick-off and looked to Morgan and Steven for support which in turn fed Jake Allbert to stretch his legs down the left flank, almost outstripping the covering defence. From the breakdown, Edwin released the backline and Morgan chipped and chased only to be tackled off the ball just prior to a certain touchdown resulting in a penalty try being awarded, Keegan converted.

Substitutions were made with Jake Summers, Spencer Hanlon, James Brasher and Dan Williams entering the fray. The good work continued as James scored the next try with Callum providing the continuity between breakdowns and good hands from Tom Wacey releasing him down the wing to jink through a number of defenders to score with Keegan converting. Chepstow were, by now, completely dominant with some examples of good defensive line speed creating turnovers and launching further attacks. Keegan finished another flowing move sparked by a Spencer turnover and. good work at the breakdown by Dan & Jake S. Morgan also scored to close out half-time at 38-0.

The boys were pleased with themselves at the break, Harry Glynn had volunteered to play for them for 10 minutes in the 1st half and Joe Beard volunteered to play for them in 2nd half, it’s really pleasing to see the boys volunteer to do this. The 2nd half saw more of the same with Chepstow’s greater fitness showing through – notably the work rate from Fred & Jake who both covered a lot of ground. Spencer made a good impact in the tight areas showing his strength, Dan supported well and unluckily missed out on his own score. The tries came from Ieuan showing good awareness, one for the scrapbook for Morgan, with a long weaving run followed by a chip over the covering defence to win the race for the touchdown, Will Supple was at the centre of most things by now and scored another trademark try, James showing more and more confidence used his pace to score his 2nd and it fell to the Captain, Rhys Swain to score the final try. Glamorgan Wanderers had scored a consolation try in the midst of our spree so the final score was 65-7 to Chepstow.

Really pleasing points were: more successful debuts with Harry having a really positive impact and Ieuan who was voted man of the match, great handling with all players looking very comfortable on the ball and decent defence that meant their bigger players never got momentum.

Points to work on: not much to call out after such a successful day, the major area we can move forward on is the mental side of the game, trying to get all the boys fully switched on all of the time but that will come over time……

Well done everyone, on we go…………..
